Globalization, defined as extending to other parts of the globe, takes on a deeper meaning in today’s society. The western hemisphere is taking its technological advances and ideas, and forcing them onto other countries. This makes for both helpful and harmful effects.
Like most everything globalization is good in small amounts. Allowing things, the internet for instance, to be available in other countries can have useful results. People’s income may raise, more people have the opportunity to be educated, and employment increases. It also increases tourism, which is the foundation of some nation’s economy. This makes globalization beneficial for those who want and can accept it.
Though, too much of something can also be a bad thing. Western ways should not be forced onto certain societies. Non-cash based economies, for example, should not be forced into globalization. It would ruin their family life and culture. Those civilizations have a set way of doing things, that enable their societies to run peacefully. Being closed off from the outside world protects their identity. Globalizing would ultimately destroy their way of life.
Not everyone can handle globalization. In certain societies globalization is not needed. Some survive better without it, while others benefit from it. It just depends where and in what amounts it is used. Like junk food, globalization needs to be used in moderation.
I don’t agree with the fact that not all societies need globalized. I believe that globalization has created an extraordinary opportunity for people in the lower classes throughout the world to earn a right into the middle class. 1/3 of the population in India is illiterate and I don’t believe it is fair that almost all Americans are taught to read at such a young but so many Indians can’t read. This is because of so many people living in poverty and globalization can lead them to read and live better lives in the middle class. However, I do believe that globalization in large amounts can be harmful. For example, globalization has benefited China’s economy in a variety of ways but this increased economy also has a negative because more and more Chinese citizens are driving cars which will further contribute to pollution and destruction of the atmosphere.
