Culture influence and introduction in North America are becoming stronger. Every year I find myself more and more
influenced by different cultures. A larger amount of cultural ideas and ways of life are available to others. Restaurants,
exercising and dance classes are available to individuals. There are Chinese restaurants, Yoga, Tango, and a number of
other things that originated in one society and made its way to America. These allow people to have the opportunity to
experience and incorporate other cultures into their lives. Overall, this is a good thing. People become more rounded and
have more acceptances to other people and their cultures.
Mass globalization is not happening just in major cities, but in the suburbs as well. Different aspects of cultures are
not added just for the benefit of those of different ethnicity. Things, such as restaurant with foreign food, are not popping
up solely for good business. Underneath that, people are willing to add such things in their daily lives, and the business
response to that is that they are.
Adding different cultures into our lives does not make us a one culture world. We use these cultural ideas and tweak
them into something that shapes our society. Food for instance, Indian food we get at restaurants is not the same as the
food you would get in India. Tai Chi has one meaning in the U.S and a totally different one in china. Here it is used in order
to get exercise, become less fatigued, or to just try something new and exciting. In China it has a much more spiritual
meaning. It reflects their culture, while the U.S shapes it into something that reflects their own culture.
Shawna, overall a good start and some interesting points. Some recommendations as you go forward:
It seems as if you are beginning to stretch a bit for information as you get to the end of the piece. I wonder if you could talk to your friends or others in the class to get some ideas for how globalization appears around us. Or, you may have to come up with an idea to take it a step further – like how is globalization going to affect our lives in 10 years? 50? How has it changed over the last 10 years? Since 9-11? What do you think the US should do to adjust? your community? The University? You? What advantages does it have? Disadvantages? How can we take advantage of it… Etc.
If you have any questions as you expand, let me know! Thanks!
